January 2012

CEO Corner

Happy New Year!

Before we drive headlong into the new year I'd like to pause for a moment and acknowledge our company's most valuable assets -- you, our customers! I've been associated with several organizations throughout my career however, the customers I have met at FieldView Solutions stand out as among the most knowledgeable and driven colleagues it has become my pleasure to be associated with. Thank you for selecting FieldView Solutions. As my 2012 New Year's resolution, I resolve never to lose sight of the value you bring to this organization and pledge to work harder in order to surpass your expectations.

As I look back on the previous year, our company has made some considerable accomplishments with regards to gaining significant market share within the Data Center Infrastructure Management marketplace. Case-in-point: we added the world's largest online retailer and cloud-based service provider as well as large government agencies and Telx to our family of growing customers.

From a product perspective, we've listened to your requests and acknowledged your feedback to help us develop FieldView 4.0, an enhanced version of our award-winning DCIM solution. This new solution quickly grabbed the market's attention and actually provided the impetus for a new partnership forged with Intel. Throughout the months, we will keep you informed as to the fruits of this new partnership and how they may benefit your organizations.

Regarding your feedback, last year we also extended our quest to share your real-world insights and developed the industry's first DCIM survey. Over the coming weeks, we will send you some very interesting results, which will allow you to compare your data center views with those of your peers. We trust you will find this information helpful to validate some of your data center choices.

Our company momentum continued strong throughout the year as we completed interoperability testing with Universal Electric Corporation, the manufacturer of the electrical power distribution system, STARLINE Track Busway, as well as capturing a number of industry accolades including two awards: AlwaysOn: Venture Summit Mid-Atlantic 100 and GoingGreen Global 200 for company and product innovations. This is in addition to FieldView Solutions being listed among New York Enterprise Report's 10 Great Entrepreneurial Places to Work.

Sadly, in December, we bid farewell to our CSO and good friend, David Schirmacher, as he joined Digital Realty Trust as Sr. VP of Technical Operations. It was a difficult decision for David to leave as he has truly become part of our family, but in the end, he chose to take advantage of a truly unique opportunity and pursue what he referred to as "the ultimate challenge." David's vision and guidance will continue to influence the FieldView platform as it continues to evolve. And just like family members, we will maintain a close relationship that will inevitably keep benefiting our FieldView Solutions' family. We wish David the best of luck as he embarks upon his new endeavors.

As always, we extend an invitation for you to engage in thoughtful discussions via our 147 member strong FieldView DCIM Professionals LinkedIn Group as well as follow us and keep the conversation moving through Twitter, FB, Blog, YouTube and Google+.

Once again, thank you for becoming part of our FieldView Solutions family. We truly appreciate your business, collaboration and look forward to the challenges 2012 brings to our doorstep.

Sincerely
Fred Dirla, CEO

Customer Case Study

Global Publishing Company Deploys FV to Reduce Carbon Footprint

When a global publishing, financial, information and media services company -- with revenues of over $6B, and 21,000 employees spread across 280 offices in 40 countries -- planned to build a new 90,000 square foot data center in an 180,000 square foot building in Central NJ, they required tools for complete access and oversight to all parts of their system that included:

  • Complete scalability to allow future expansion.
  • User-based ability to add and remove equipment as needed.
  • A fully secure system which did not require external access.
  • Complete circuit monitoring with built-in teaming and redundancy planning.
  • A complete suite of user-defined IT and facilities alarming.

The company deployed FieldView to assist in the installation of the PDUs and servers. Once the data center was brought online, FieldView proved to be an invaluable tool in capacity planning, PDU utilization, and chiller plant operation. By the year's end, the new site recorded a 20% savings in energy consumption compared to the other data center sites due to monitoring capabilities to reduce its carbon footprint.

FieldView Solutions Conducts Industry's First DCIM Survey

By John Consoli

FieldView Solutions invited industry professionals to engage in the industry's first DCIM survey and the results were very insightful. The survey results, which we partially shared at the December 2011 Data Center Dynamics' conference in Toronto, Canada, revealed that:

  • 77% of responders are trending data for analytics
  • 53% are not receiving all necessary data
  • Over half of the responding data center managers and C-Level executives currently oversee three or more data centers and more than half of those individuals use multiple versions of BMS, BAS or EMPS systems.
  • 93% of those surveyed would find it valuable to roll data up from all data center locations into a single repository.

We also had a little fun with the survey, and discovered that 53% of data center managers/C-Level executives are frustrated with their methods of collecting data and would rather be stuck in a New Jersey-based reality show than continue to deal with it!

On a serious note, the survey helped validate FieldView Solutions' belief: most data center managers seek new tools that can provide real-time data views across multiple business zones. We will continue to help facilities/IT managers and directors -- as well as C-Level executives -- to truly understand how their distributed data centers are performing while identifying problem areas at a glance.
